Tittle Sequence Clips Review

          The beginning of movies, which I had no idea were in so important, can make or break a movie. When a title designer starts a project, they must consider pretty much everything. From the tone of the movie, the age its set in, what you want the audience to feel, all the way down to what fount the names/words are written in.  

            In First Frames: titles in the digital realm Miles Merri says, "Each show has a titles package where words can dance around, spin, expand, and even sing".  All these things plus many more, are tasked with capturing the audience's attention this 2-4 minute is crucial for a movie. Not only do opening scenes set the mood and tone of the rest of the movie, they also foreshadow heavily. 

             

               For example, in Scream even the tiniest things foreshadow bad happenings, like the camera following her from behind, the camera zooming out to see the room and window behind her, and the music speeding up and slowing down at certain lines. This can also be seen in JAWS, one of the most classic shark/horror movies of all time. When even a shot of a coral reef and fishes can seem ominous with the right music, which foreshadows the shark in the water and how its most likely to attack someone. Along with foreshadowing opening scenes also help the audience understand the plot/ characters and what the whole thing is about. Miles says, "The best film typography isn't superfluous or incongruous, but its fundamentally helps tell the story.". An example of this is Saturday Night Live, when the words come on the screen, they come on fast and big. They are huge fancy red letters, and immediately you know the movie is going to be in your face and have at least one bold character.  

             

                 Let's take Pulp Fiction and Dazed and Confused for example, in both intros the words have the same colors, kind of warm tones like red, orange , and yellow, but they are vastly different because of the way they come in and when they come in. In all movies the words and the music and setting all play a huge role in setting up a movie for failure or success. Considering 2001 Space Odassy and how creators told the entire story using a black screen and the right music. The amount of talent and perspective it takes to do that is incredible.  

             

                   Because of all these things I am extremely excited to do a film for my project. I really want to make my own story and see how I can develop my own ideas and creations. Using what I learned it this class.
